Land Restoration: a Nature-Based Solution
for Resilience in Times of Uncertainty
Rio Conventions Pavilion event in the GEF/GCF Pavilion
09 November 2022 from 18:15-19:45
Land restoration is critical for responding to multiple global crises, including biodiversity loss and climate change. However, land restoration cannot be scaled up quickly enough to significantly reduce peak global temperatures and is ultimately limited by existing land uses. While restoring ecosystems is crucial for planetary health, it is no substitute for preventing emissions from fossil fuels. Cost-effective and flexible restoration pathways can be tailored to just about any context and scale if there is political will, inclusive governance, and sustained finance. This side event will:
- Highlight the benefits of coordinated efforts to promote efficiencies, bundle investments, and leverage obvious synergies among the Rio Conventions and other restoration commitments.
- Present key messages from the Global Land Outlook, 2nd edition: soil health for carbon sequestration; transforming food systems for a more resilient future; secure tenure and gender responsiveness for economic development; matching financial resources with human and social capital; enhancing Rio Convention synergies by aligning national action plans; flagship projects under UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, specifically the G20 Initiative and Middle East Greening Initiative.
